Choosing pencils, watercolour pencils and chalk

HB pencils are the all-rounder for writing and outlines, while 2B leads are softer and darker, which makes them better for shading. Watercolour pencils let you draw with control first, then run a wet brush over the lines to blend them like paint, so pair them with a palette such as the 10 Well Plastic Palette ($3.00). Jumbo pencils and jumbo crayons are easier for small hands to grip. For chalk, use white sticks on a chalkboard and the jumbo coloured sticks outdoors on paths and driveways. Add markers and pens and pencils to your kit, and grab a sketchbook from art diaries and pads.
