The Base Warehouse hires helium tanks for balloons from all 8 of its party stores in Sydney, the Central Coast and Wagga Wagga, NSW. A small tank is $79.99 and fills about 50 standard 30cm latex balloons, a medium is $149.99 for about 100, and a large is $329 for about 300, each plus a refundable deposit of $100 to $150. Tanks are collected in store, returned to the same store within 5 days, and every hire includes the nozzle. You can call your nearest store ahead to have a tank set aside.

How helium tank hire works

1Reserve a tank. Call your nearest store a few days ahead and the store will set a tank aside for you.

2Bring ID. A valid Australian driver licence must be provided at the time of rental.

3Pay the hire fee and the refundable deposit. The deposit is $100, $125 or $150 depending on tank size and is not included in the hire price. If paying your security deposit using a non-chip enabled eftpos debit/credit card, you will be liable for the full security deposit amount, refundable to you upon return of the helium tank within 5 days of rental.

4Collect the tank and nozzle. Each hire includes a separately provided nozzle that must be returned with the tank. If you have not used a helium tank before, tell staff at pickup and they will show you how to use it.

5Fill your balloons at home or at the venue, keeping the tank upright and secured.

6Return the tank and nozzle within 5 days to the same store you hired them from to get your deposit back. Tanks not returned within 5 days are charged $10 per day.

Balloon inflation in store
Every The Base Warehouse store fills helium and air balloons in store.
All balloon inflation orders need to be booked with your store in advance, and balloon arrangement orders need to be booked 1 to 2 weeks ahead, as weekends are especially busy. Inflation bookings are made in store, not over the phone or online.
Inflation prices below are for helium only; the balloon is an extra cost. Arrangements are an additional $1.30 per balloon, and 1.5m of ribbon is supplied with every balloon inflated.

Because latex balloons only float for hours, plan to fill them or pick them up on the day of your event. Air-filled and helium foil arrangements last over 24 hours and still look good, so they can be collected the day before. HI-FLOAT treatment coats the inside of latex balloons to slow helium loss; with ULTRA HI-FLOAT, helium latex balloons float 25 times longer on average.

Helium tank safety
Helium is a colourless, non-toxic, non-flammable gas that is lighter than air and relatively safe to handle. When misused it can cause serious injury or death: it displaces oxygen, and breathing it can cause unconsciousness without warning.
- Store and use the tank upright, secured so it cannot be knocked over, in a well-ventilated area.
- Attach the balloon nozzle before opening the valve. Close the valve after each use and when the tank is empty.
- Remove the nozzle and refit the protective cap before transporting the tank.
- Never let anyone breathe helium from the tank or from balloons.
- Do not let children or untrained people handle the tank or filling equipment.
- Never leave a tank unattended in a public area.
- Do not drop, drag, tip over or roll the tank on its side.
- Never use a nozzle, tank or valve that is damaged, leaking or not working properly. Return it to the store.
