How to build a basic home tool kit

Start with the tools you reach for every month: a claw hammer, screwdrivers or a ratchet driver with bits, pliers, a utility knife and a spirit level. Add a boxed set of screws, nails and wall plugs so you are not hunting for one fixing mid job. Match the plug to the wall, since masonry and plasterboard need different fixings. Check the load rating printed on shackles and tie downs before use, and store blades with the guard on.
