How to choose glass jars, canisters and vases

For the pantry, pick jars with a lid that suits what goes inside: clip lids for flour, sugar and pasta and metal lids for snacks. Conserve jars sold in packs of 4 to 18 are the easy option for jam, sauces, bomboniere and lolly jars at events. For flowers, a cylinder vase is the most flexible shape; buy several of the same size for wedding and party centrepieces, and use a tall 40cm or 50cm cylinder for long stems. Wash new glass in warm soapy water before first use, and avoid moving glass straight from very hot to very cold.
