Which cake decorating tools do you need first

Start with the basics: a whisk and batter spatula for mixing, a cake tester to check the middle is cooked, and a leveler or long knife to trim domed tops flat. For frosting, a cranked or offset spatula spreads buttercream without your knuckles dragging through it, and a cake scraper held upright against the side while you turn the cake on a turntable gives a clean, straight edge. If you are working with fondant, a rolling pin with even thickness makes covering a cake much easier, and plunger cutters let you punch out neat flowers, hearts and butterflies in seconds.
