How to build a costume from clothing pieces

Start with a plain base from your wardrobe, like black leggings and a T-shirt, then add two or three costume pieces that tell the story. A neon mesh top, fishnets and leg warmers make an instant 80s outfit. A cape over dark clothes covers a vampire or superhero, and a tutu with coloured stockings suits a fairy or ballerina. Rainbow striped tights and a bright singlet go a long way for a clown costume. Check sizes in the titles: kids tutus are 30cm long, and legwear comes in S/M, M/L, Plus Size and X Large, so pick the one that matches your usual hosiery size.
