How to put together a Mardi Gras outfit

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is in February and early March, so plan for warm nights and a lot of standing. Start with a base: a romper, bodysuit or sequin dress, or a tutu over metallic shorts. Add a layer of colour with fishnets, thigh highs and long gloves, then top it off with a wig, hat or headband. Finish with body jewels, glitter and a flag or wavers to hold on the parade route. Wear shoes you can walk in and pick breathable pieces for the heat. For adhesive body jewels and hair chalk, do a patch test and follow the packet directions. Hosting at home?
