How to choose plates and bowls for your table

Start with the plate size. A 26cm to 27cm dinner plate is the everyday standard, 19.5cm to 20cm side plates handle bread, entree and dessert, and a 21cm pasta bowl works for pasta, curry and salads. Rice bowls around 11cm to 12.7cm suit rice, dips and sides. Porcelain and bone china feel right for the dinner table; melamine suits kids, outdoor dining and catering. A plain white base set mixes easily with coloured Studio or Canopy pieces. Buy a couple of spares in the size you use most, since that is the one that gets chipped first.
