How to keep a home stocked without the clutter

Keep a running list on the fridge and restock in one trip rather than five. A simple routine works for most households: once a month, check the consumables that always run out at the worst moment, such as garbage bags, cling wrap, foil, freezer bags, sponges and glue sticks, and buy two of anything you use weekly. Give each consumable a home, like a clear tub in the laundry for cleaning spares and a drawer basket in the kitchen for wraps and bags, so you can see at a glance when stock is low. Label shelves in the pantry and linen cupboard so everyone in the house puts things back in the same place.

Getting organised room by room

Work one room at a time and start with the space that annoys you most. In the kitchen, measure drawers before buying trays and group items by task, so baking gear, lunch box supplies and wraps each live together. In the bathroom, suction caddies and hooks free up bench space without drilling. In kids' rooms and craft corners, lidded tubs and labelled baskets keep paint, paper and yarn sorted. In the laundry, a peg basket, buckets and a hamper with a lid keep the floor clear. For the car and outdoors, keep an umbrella and a small cleaning kit in the boot.
