Paintwell Student Canvas comes in dozens of sizes, and cardboard sheets at 63.5cm x 51cm are $1.50 each. Knitters get Knitting Yarn 8 Ply in 100g balls at $2.99 across a long colour list, plus chunky 3 ply yarn and 200g Jumbo Muffin Yarn. For modelling, there is Air Drying Clay in a 1kg tub ($8.99) or a 5kg block ($23.99) and White Polymer Clay in 55g. How to plan a craft project without overbuying

Start with the finished piece and work backwards. Write down the surface (canvas, card or wood), what goes on it (paint, glue, glitter) and what decorates it, then buy for that list. For kids' groups, allow one pack of craft sticks or pom poms between two children and one glue stick each. Buy acrylic paint in a few base colours plus white, since white lightens any colour. For knitting, check the ply and weight on the pattern and buy all balls of a colour together. Browse paint for arts and craft, wool and yarn, modelling clay and DIY craft kits and embellishments to fill in the gaps.
