How to match the paper to your medium

The gsm figure tells you how heavy the paper is, and heavier paper handles more water and paint. Use 110gsm visual diaries for pencil, pen, collage and school folios. Step up to 140gsm or 150gsm pads for graphite and charcoal. Choose 180gsm mixed media when you combine markers and light washes, and go to 300gsm watercolour or oil and acrylic pads for anything wet. Black paper pads make light pencils and gel pens stand out. Tracing paper pads are handy for transferring a drawing onto canvas. Stock up on pencils, charcoal and pastels and craft paint to match.
