How to choose pens and pencils for school

Check the booklist first, since many schools ask for HB pencils in the early years and blue or black ballpoints later on. Retractable pens save lost lids, and erasable gel pens suit kids still learning to write neatly. Mechanical pencils keep a consistent line for maths and technical drawing, so buy refills with them. Jumbo colour pencils are easier for small hands to grip. Label pencil cases, pack a sharpener and keep spare pens at home for homework.
